Last week I saw this pic of a
coconut crab at a Christmas Island construction site. According to the Wikipedia article about them, they are also called "robber crabs" because they are attracted to shiny objects like pots and pans and snatch them from people's houses.
This is super not cool! Me a Jeremy were commenting on how we would be way more freaked out if we saw this thing digging through our trash than a bear (well at least a smallish bear).
Anyway... yesterday we went to Todai for dinner and I loaded up on the crab legs as usual. But I couldn't help feeling creeped out while I was cracking them open. I kept imagining I was eating this guy. Coconut crabs can apparently live up to like 30 or 40 years. That's like at least a 25 year statue of limitation for revenge. Let's hope they don't hold a grudge.
I think I'm developing a crab phobia.
